01   PROJECTS & PARTNERSHIPS / MEDTECH & MEDICAL MANUFACTURING

Equipment installation is complete.
Production is still waiting.

People from the equipment supplier have completed their installation. Engineering are closing out adjustments. Quality need confidence in the qualification evidence. Production have people and Build Plan commitments to plan around.

Everyone’s working towards successful line commissioning. They’re not yet working from the same understanding of what it requires from one another.

02   MEDTECH & MEDICAL MANUFACTURING / DELIVERY CONTEXT

A small adjustment.
A different meaning for each group.

The supplier has fine-tuned a machine setting. Engineering sees a practical improvement. Quality asks whether the qualification evidence and work instructions still reflect the revised process. Production wants to know what operators will need to do differently.

To one group, the issue is nearly closed. To another, it has only just become clear. As the start-up date approaches, requests for clarification begin to sound like criticism, and reasonable questions are heard as obstacles.

Hidden Currents helps the groups bring those different accounts into a constructive conversation: what each understands, what it needs from the others and how its own assumptions and behaviour are affecting progress. And what now needs to change.

MEDTECH & MEDICAL MANUFACTURING / SCENARIOS

Scenario 1   MEDTECH & MEDICAL MANUFACTURING

Complete according to whom?

Site acceptance testing has gone well. People from the equipment supplier are preparing to finish their site work, confident that the installation is now complete. But on site, Engineering still have an open-points list; Quality need clarity on the evidence for qualification; Production are waiting for agreed operating conditions. Each group believes its requirements have already been communicated. Progress meetings collect separate updates without resolving the gap between the supplier’s confidence and the site’s unresolved requirements. Statements of progress become defensive, commitments become qualified and confidence in one another weakens. The line’s route into production remains uncertain.

Scenario 2   MEDTECH & MEDICAL MANUFACTURING

The fix works. What else has changed?

A supplier engineer makes a software adjustment to resolve a recurring machine fault. Engineering welcome the fix. Quality ask what has changed and what must be checked or documented. People from the supplier hear a challenge to their competence; Quality feel they are being asked to accept a change they have not had a chance to assess. Production commit to a restart date before the groups have agreed what remains unresolved, treating further questions as avoidable delay. The technical question becomes a contest over who is delaying whom. Decisions slow, working relationships harden and the line remains caught between conflicting commitments.

Scenario 3   MEDTECH & MEDICAL MANUFACTURING

The new line equipment is handed over. The next shift is still asking.

During trials, an experienced operator and the supplier’s engineer found ways to keep the new line equipment running. No one records the conversation or the new understanding they reached while working together to keep the line running. People from the supplier move to their next assignment; Engineering are drawn into another project. A later shift meets the same stoppage and cannot get a clear response. Production feel left with an unfinished job; the project team believe they have done their job and it’s now up to others to complete the fine-tuning. Repeated calls for support or more resources become exchanges of blame, undermining wider team cooperation and morale, and putting production numbers and stability at risk.

03   MEDTECH & MEDICAL MANUFACTURING / CLOSING INVITATION

What’s happening among the groups your manufacturing process depends on?

Start with the recurring stoppage, the unclear completion status or the exchanges between supplier and site teams that are becoming harder. We’ll explore with you what’s happening among the Supplier, Engineering, Quality and Production teams, and what would help the line reach stable production sooner.
